Natural Cordage

People have been making cordage from natural fibers for thousands of years. In California, plants like dogbane, milkweed, yucca, stinging nettle, willow, and cattail have been used, each requiring its own process and creating cordage suited for different purposes.

At Nature Play, Pamela will guide participants in crafting cordage using raffia, a fiber from palm leaves. Beginners might create a necklace or a small net bag, while those feeling more adventurous may take on a sturdier bag or even a hat.

As we wander the land, we’ll also meet a variety of plants that can be turned into cordage, just in case you ever need a rope in a hurry!
